Everything you need to know about how CarConditionCompare works and how to interpret your results.
CarConditionCompare is an analysis engine which provides detailed insights into the MOT defect history of a vehicle, relative to other cars of the same model, age and mileage.
The analysis engine combines MOT records of similar vehicles, enabling analysis of a car's condition relative to others of the same car.
For example: entering registration plate ABC 1234 which is an Audi A3, 1.6 petrol 2012 with 100,000 miles — CarConditionCompare would compare how this car compares to all other existing 2012 1.6 petrol Audi A3s with similar mileage.
Official DVSA MOT data — providing data for all UK registered vehicles that have had an MOT.
Percentile scores show how a vehicle compares to others in its comparison group. A lower percentile is better — for example, a score of 10% means the vehicle has fewer defects in that category than 90% of comparable vehicles. A score of 0% means the vehicle has no recorded defects in that category.
The condition score is a single 0–100 number summarising the vehicle's overall defect history relative to its comparison group. A higher score means better condition relative to other similar examples.
Minor defects (advisories) are issues noted by the MOT tester that are not serious enough to cause a failure but should be monitored or repaired soon. Major defects (failures) are faults that directly caused the vehicle to fail its MOT test and must be repaired before the vehicle can be used on public roads.
